About Wado-Ryu Karate
Wado Ryu Karate is a unique martial art, which differentiates itself from other styles of Karate by emphasising evasive body movements. These smooth and fast body movements help the karate student to avoid an opponent's fist and leg attacks while having the strength to block a strike with an arm becomes secondary. Wado Ryu Karate also encompasses various throws and arm locks practised in JuJitsu. In essence Wado Ryu has been recognised as one of the fastest and most fluid Karate styles with a balanced training programme of fighting techniques and Kata or Form.
Grandmaster Suzuki was famous for instilling in his students a serious and determined approach to karate training, he wrote that the essential progress of a karate student is condensed in a traditional Japanese saying ‘obedience, divergence, separation’. This means that the student must first move correctly as advised by the instructor, after many years of dedicated practice the student must gradually break with this technique and subtly develop their own style. Finally, the student must separate themselves from their early practice so that their technique becomes natural and a product of blending intention and movement – this is the ‘art’ of martial arts.
Grandmaster Suzuki wrote in his classic 1967 publication ‘Karate-Do’ that, ‘Karate is basically a training process to bring a person back to the natural state of mind he or she was born with, dispelling delusions’.
Wado Ryu Karate is an excellent system of training for improving fitness and maintaining a healthy body and mind. It is practical and effective as a system of self-defence, particularly for women. The practice of karate is a lifelong project and there is always more to learn, both physically, technically and mentally.
